Invented in 1850, mercury fillings (silver amalgam) served well as a strong, durable material during an era when life spans were short and teeth were lost early. Always controversial, amalgam fillings are 50% mercury, a proven neurotoxin. Considered a hazardous waste outside the mouth, we simply do not use it. We practice strict safety when removing old mercury fillings as well.
